How to engage effectively

Issue 15 - 3 minutes read.

Engaging is a big part of Personal Branding and the Twitter game in general.

Especially at the beginning (0-1000) your main focus should be on making genuine connections.

But how do you do that effectively without doom-scrolling all day?

I’m gonna share with you my engagement strategy today, and how I used it to grow an engaging audience of 4000 followers in 3 months.

Let’s dive in Legend.

Know your niche and audience

To make genuine connections, you need to have genuine interest in the person you want to connect with. Sounds logical right?

To find those people you need to know X things:

  • Who is my target audience?

  • What is the main topic I want to write about?

The clearer your picture of your target audience is, the better you can connect with the right people.

Find the industry leaders and influencers of your niche.

Create Lists

The Twitter UI is shit. Bad search function, and scrolling on the timeline is a waste of time.

To engage effectively, I have 3 Twitter lists.

  • Big accounts, industry leaders. (They got the audience you want)

  • Creators few steps ahead. (They’ll support you if you support them, find them in the comment sections of big accounts)

  • Creators on my level. (You want strong connections with them and support each other)

Create those lists and use Tweetdeck to engage with them.
You can put all 3 lists on one screen, which makes engaging more effective.

I make 1-2 30 min engagement sessions per day. 10 minutes for each list per session.

For the big accounts: I rarely engage with the big accounts, I engage with their audience in the comments of their content. (You want to steal them)

DM’s

DM’s are the superpower of Twitter. Don’t fuck it up with “Yo bro let’s connect”. You’ll lose instantly.

My approach on DM’s is to break the ice in the comments.
That means I engage with their content in a valuable way, and if I get some positive response I can send a personalized DM.

Don’t send DMs with the goal to get a follow or client, send a DM to show genuine interest in the person.

Networking on Twitter is everything!

Replies

If you get replies on your content, respond to every single one.
The algo benefits replies like nothing else right now.

So try to respond to everyone.

At some point, it isn’t possible to reply to all your comments, but at least respond to those who make meaningful comments.

There are a lot of replies that don’t deserve your time, don’t get suck into the replying trap. (I was there, it’s no fun)

Focus on the people who provide value to your content.

I do this for 30-60 mins per day.

Tools

There are a lot of tools to improve your engagement progress.
As mentioned before, Tweetdeck is very useful to engage with your lists.

But if you want to make engaging and finding your audience a breeze, you need Tweethunter.

For me it’s the best tool for Twitter and basically the only one I use.

  • Engage directly with mentions, your lists, and followers/followings.

  • Advanced search for keywords, accounts, and content.

  • Draft, schedule, and recreate your content.

  • Analytics, statistics

  • Auto DM, RT, Plugs.

  • AI tools for inspiration

All you need in one tool.

So if you want to take your whole Twitter game to the next level, I highly recommend getting Tweethunter. (Affiliate Link: http://tweethunter.io/?via=marcel)

TL:DR

  • Know your audience

  • Create lists

  • DM’s

  • Replies

  • Tools

The worst you can do is underestimate the networking part of Twitter and your personal brand.

You don’t have to spend half of your day on Twitter engaging and replying.

What you need is a good system and some discipline.

I spent max. 2 hours per day on Twitter for engaging.

  • 2× 30 min Lists

  • 30 mins DM (Will increase soon)

  • 30 mins engaging with Tweethunter (Connect to new people)

The more you put in, the more you’ll get out.

And of course: Joining the Legends community makes engaging a breeze.

Hope that helps you to get a system into your engagement process.

Newsletter change

I’m currently struggling with the whole structure and branding of the newsletter. (as always)

Mixing community + my content in one Newsletter doesn’t feel right, it’s too much to cover.

This is the reason why there will be no community part this week, I’ll need some time to figure out how I want to manage the newsletter.

Expect a second issue per week, for community news and features.

That’s it for today

Sorry for the short issue and no features, but the newsletter will become better than ever before. (Consider it as under construction)

Thanks for reading and enjoy your Sunday Legend.

Your friend, Marcel.
